2. What is the teaching course like?

If you are successful in geting a place to do a Bachelor of Teaching with Honours (Primary Science) in any of the Teacher Education Institute, the course is demanding but not difficult. 3 semesters of content input; a major such as science, english, education and so on. If you pass the examinations each semester, you will now do the 4 year bachelor course, 132 credits- 15 courses for the major (your specialisation), education components, 2 electives (for science it is English and Physical Education), outdoor activities, teaching practice in the schools (semester 5 -4 weeks, sem 6 - 8 weeks, sem 7 - 12 weeks, sem 8 - 4 weeks). There are a lot of assignments to do. Go to http://www.apps.emoe.gov.my/bpg for more information.

3. How long is the teaching course?

This whole programme is 5.5 years. It’s 1.5 for the foundation course which serves as a preparation for you before you get into your degree course. The degree itself will be another 4 years. Foundation will very much be like high school, just less spoon-feeding. For the TESL course, foundation will cover all four skills and you will do literature. There will be other subjects but it varies according to colleges and semesters. You will only go into schools to teach (practical) when you are in Year 3 or 4 (it’s either in the 6/ 7 semester) of your degree year. That’s for assessment. After that, there will probably be another semester for you to complete before you are into schools to teach, as a real teacher.

If you are keen on teaching, I’d suggest you apply for courses in teachers’ training college straight. After Form 6, you’re given 8 options. You can put education as one of your choices, but it’s up to them whether they give it to you or not. Of course, results are taken into consideration, but most of the time, people are not offered the courses they want.

4. After one has graduated from the teaching course, what salary can I expect?
